Experiencing a blue screen error is one of the most dreaded sights you can see. If your computer is the focal point of your home office/business then it becomes even more critical to get your computer working again promptly. This article provides a sequence of steps for attempting repairs by yourself for blue screen errors due to registry faults, finishing with a Reimage review to highlight how this software can provide a last line of defense for home office computer repairs.
At the start of the year my laptop experienced a fatal blue screen error stating that a critical service had failed. Research pin-pointed the cause being that the registry file had been corrupted causing the service to fail to initialize correctly.
As I work from home I cannot fall back on a PC support team to effect repairs so researched and collated the following steps for the repairs (based on actions that have worked for other users).
- Log into Windows using a different account. It is possible the registry hive for an individual account is damaged.
- Boot the computer in safe mode then run your anti-virus scan then attempt rolling back the registry to a back up copy (if available).
- Start the computer using the Windows boot disk then run all hardware/system checks. This is a long shot approach but may pick up problems (e.g. hard disk sector faults) that have affected the registry file.
- Resort to PC maintenance software to automate repairs.
In my instance, I resorted finally to using Reimage PC maintenance software. The application scans your registry, operating system files (device drivers, DLLs, etc) and application files for faults and uses an online database of healthy system configurations to repair your system with working files. The scanning process took about 20 minutes and it reported numerous registry problems. The resulting repair stage took 10 minutes and after a reboot the computer was operational once more.
As a home office user the key lesson from this was to always maintain backup copies of the registry file so that it may be rolled back if required. If all else fails it is also good to know that there are software repair solutions available to automate the repairs.
